The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has been established as regulatory authority for a profession of a nurse in Great Britain.

Register of NMC
It includes three parts: nurses, midwifes and specialized nurses.

    Medical nurses and midwifes, who have received their education and qualification abroad may apply for registration in one or several appropriate sectors of the register:

For medical nurses:
• General qualification nurses
• Medical nurses by care of patients with mental disorders
• Medical nurses by care of patients with limited abilities for studying and education
• Children's medical nurses

For medical midwifes:
• Midwifes

To apply for registration of a nurse or medical midwife it is necessary to demonstrate availability of education and clinical practice according to the standards of NMC.

Can I apply?
Primary training

    Order for registration is applied only in the case if qualification of a nurse or midwife is available in the relevant country.

    In Great Britain all pre-registration training of the nurse is carried out on the basis of completed secondary education and lasts for 3 years. The hours of theoretical training correspond to the practice of the medical nurse. Studying of other subjects such as political sciences, literature and foreign languages are not included into three-years training.

    The whole pre-registration training of the midwife in Great Britain terminates three years or 18 months for those who have been registered as medical nurse of common qualification type. Midwifery qualification, obtained abroad as a part of general medical training of the nurse usually does not correspond to three-year standards of pre-registration training in Great Britain.

Practice requirements
Necessary requirements

    It is necessary to have not less than 750 hours of practice as a nurse for the last 5 years till the moment of applying.

Mastering languages

    It is important to demonstrate fluent communication in English that includes spoken and written language. It is usually demanded to pass linguistic tests IELTS for candidates.

    Necessary documents for registration must include affirmed copies of referred below documents and also their verified translation into English (original documents are not admitted)
• Certificates of basic school education and general education with attachments and indication of termination

Attachment for the certificate
It must contain the total number of hours in practical and theoretical training with separation for each subject and indication of the character of training. If educational establishment uses concept of credits it is necessary to indicate the number of hours for each theoretical or practical credit.

Characteristics.
The following characteristics must be provided by senior medical nurse or midwife and must be correlated with appropriate type of registration the application has been admitted to:

1. Characteristics from senior medical nurse or midwife (as regarded) from the present working place, which confirm your work and abilities to represent appropriate health care services effectively and with observation of all preventive measures.

Or:
If at present being without references for work you are to supply corresponding characteristics from the recent place of work, where you have practiced for 3 months at least

2. Characteristics from senior medical nurse or midwife you have worked with for at least of one year for a period of the last 5 years.

Characteristics from agencies are not admitted.

• Characteristics from authorities that provide registration (issued directly by registration authority)
This characteristic must be filled in by registration body in person, containing confirmation of registration in your country. If the section on data of medical commission cannot be completed by registration authority then it should be filled in by a representative of medical commission or by district doctor or therapist.

Process of making decisions
Each application is considered in a special individual order. Usually due to appropriate applying and filling in proper forms and documents the answer must be awaited for three fore coming months.

Supplementary medical nurse practice

In some cases candidates are suggested to complete their supplementary training.
